Kenya

Kenya, unlike Ethiopia did not start coffee produc-tion until quite late–1890’s in fact, and com-menced due to French missionaries bringing cof-fee trees to the country. Kenyan coffees are well known for clear and com-plex berry/fruit qualities as well as for sweetness and intensity Coffee Beans are graded according to bean size and quality, the assumption being that size and quality are linked. These range from E (the larg-est) to MH/MHL

E

Elephant Beans; these are the largest so lots are small.

AA

More common grade so they typically bring the highest prices.

AB

This is a combination of bean sizes and accounts for 30% of the country’s annual production.

PB

This is the grade for peaberries where, unusually a single bean has grown inside the cof-fee cherry in-stead of two.

C

A grading below AB category, and is not usually found in high quality coffee.
